What “Justajoo” Means — and Why a Quest Is the Right Word for This Work

Justajoo (جستجو) is one of those Urdu words that does not translate cleanly. The dictionary will give you “search”, “quest”, “pursuit”, “longing”. Faiz Ahmed Faiz used it as a yearning. Ghalib used it as an obsession. In conversation, in Sindh, it is the word a parent uses when they ask if you have found what you went looking for.

It is a generous word — and a demanding one.

Why we chose it

When the foundation was being named in 2018, there was a temptation to pick something instrumental: a verb of distribution, a noun of charity, the name of a beneficiary group. The founders chose justajoo instead, because the work the foundation was about to begin would not be a one-time act. It would be a search — for the family the system had missed, for the medication the pharmacy had run out of, for the school the child needed but could not reach, for the dignity that gets dropped along the way.

What a quest means for a non-profit

If you frame your work as charity, the question is “how much do we give?” If you frame it as a quest, the questions change. Who have we not yet found? What did we miss last year? What would we have to learn to do this better?

It also changes how donors feel. A gift to a charity is a one-time act. A gift to a quest is a contribution to a longer pursuit. People stay longer. They ask better questions. They send other people.

The poetic line that keeps us honest

“Jaante hai justajoo ki manzil koi nahin, lekin jab tak saans hai, justajoo hai.”

(The quest has no fixed destination — but as long as we breathe, the quest continues.)

Pakistan is full of organisations doing good work. We do not want to be a bigger one. We want to be the one that keeps looking. We want to be the foundation a family can call when no one else has shown up. We want to be the volunteers who arrive at the school after the rains, even when the camera crew has gone home.

That is what justajoo means. That is what we are trying to do.
